A Significant Event when Rosenior Transcends Barriers

"He is a quality tactician that understands football back to front, and that's what matters most.

"But, in my role as the Blues' first black footballer, I would be lying to claim this appointment does not affect me."

These were the sentiments of the former Chelsea winger, who earned his groundbreaking debut for the Blues' first team off the bench back in the spring of 1982.

On Tuesday, the club hired RC Strasbourg manager Rosenior, 41, to be their next head coach following the exit of manager Enzo Maresca.

The French club is within a Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned BlueCo which also controls Chelsea.

Statistics show only twelve of African or Caribbean heritage managers – excluding those in temporary caretaker positions – in the Premier League since its inception 34 years ago.

"What really strikes me about Liam is he grew up and developed his game locally, he understands this community," continued Canoville.

"When youngsters see a figure like Rosenior in charge of their club, a person they can identify with, from a similar background, from a family that champions what's right… that's profound demonstrating the path is there.

"So yes, it is a huge step for the club, for London, for every aspiring individual dreaming big.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, give him what he needs, and allow him to do his work."

What Exactly Do the Data Show?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit was appointed Chelsea head coach back in the nineties and became the Premier League's first African heritage head coach.

Twelve years later, by 2008, Paul Ince became the first English black boss in the Premier League when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo is the sole additional current top flight boss from a minority ethnic background.

The lack of managers of colour throughout the English game corresponds with a lack of representation at executive level.

As per a Black Footballers Partnership 2023's study, 43% of Premier League footballers come from African or Caribbean heritage.

Yet, research from the equality organization revealed only 3.2% of board and senior leadership positions at most Premier League clubs are from minority ethnic communities.

Regarding senior coaching positions, according to data provided by 11 clubs, the figure is 2%.

Across all coaching positions – encompassing senior roles – from the same 11 clubs, the statistic is five percent.

"He's certainly broken barriers in terms of his appointment as a Chelsea head coach, and as an organization, we want to see more of that," stated the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged that there exists loads of talent present within ethnic minority groups... aspiring coaches desire the opportunity to show what they can do. It is imperative to persist in work hard to break those barriers once and for all."

Additionally, the new appointee will become the fourth permanent British managers presently managing in the top flight – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – which trails the continent's other big five divisions regarding homegrown representation.

Sixteen of the 20 first division coaches in Italy are Italian, Eleven of the 20 are Spanish, 12 of the 18 in Germany and Ten of the 18 in France.

The present Blues interim boss Calum McFarlane commented: "I'm sure every aspiring British coaches with a youth development pedigree are, in some way no matter who you support, rooting for Liam.

"It's really inspirational to young English coaches in the system to see an individual land that job with his background and we hope he does really well."

'Let's not forget – he's there based on talent'

His father, Leroy, Rosenior Sr., had a career with clubs such as Fulham, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, and his coaching stint peaked with a five-month stint at the third-tier club Brentford FC back in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's Honours List for services rendered in combating inequality within the sport and wider society.

After Liam retired from playing he pursued a path in management. He began writing articles for a national newspaper, and in one piece he addressed the lack of diversity of black coaches. He highlighted that ethnicity does not determine coaching skill and said opportunities must be awarded based on qualification.

He also made the view he has often stated: how vast under-representation leads to a failure to understand regarding footballers from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

During an interview for a football podcast, Rosenior highlighted the way his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "difficult" or "emotional", noting that he understood the Netherlands international with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to follow him in moving from Strasbourg to West London this summer.

In further newspaper articles, Rosenior also admitted to being "embarrassed" to hear an unnamed coach make a discriminatory remark. He pledged support for the Premier League's inclusion initiative and wrote a public message to the former US President during his first US presidency, accusing him of "overt" racism.

He has subsequently built his reputation as a manager – initially with Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week he was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" following their collaboration at Derby County.

Rosenior said his farewells to his former club earlier this week prior to putting pen to paper on a long-term contract at Chelsea.

The Blues had the Premier League's first African heritage manager with Gullit as well as the first black captain named Paul Elliott.
