A 60-day journey through Australia was terminated days after the tragic passing of an older lady who was stranded by the vessel on a distant tropical isle.

Suzanne Rees had been hiking on the tropical location with shipmates from the vessel, but separated from the group for a break. The vessel sailed away leaving her and went back later that day after the ship staff discovered the passenger was missing.

A large-scale search operation found her person the following day.

Investigative bodies are looking into the tragedy, in coordination with law enforcement and the medical examiner.

The CEO of the cruise operator said that passengers and staff on the ship were informed that the rest of the journey had been called off due to the "tragic passing and prior mechanical issues".

In a statement, he added that guests would be provided a full refund, and said the company was working "to arrange the return journeys of the passengers via specially arranged planes".

Officials also published an latest communication, and said they had "provided a order to the Commander" preventing any new passengers from entering the liner.

The official said that they would visit the vessel in the port city upon its arrival.

Chronology of Occurrences

The vessel first departed the coastal city on the 24th of October, and was just two days into the journey at the time of the elderly woman's demise. Lizard Island was the first stop on the journey.

Guests on the ship - who typically pay substantial amounts of dollars to take part in the expedition - were taken there for a daily excursion with the choice of walking or snorkelling.

Relatives Statement

The offspring of the deceased woman said that her loved ones was "shocked and grieved that the vessel left Lizard Island after an scheduled outing without my parent".

Through her comments, she characterized her mother as an "active octogenarian" who was a participant of a hiking group.

"According to scant information we have been provided, it seems that there was a lapse of responsibility and common sense," she mentioned.

She continued that she wished the inquiry would be able to determine what "the operator should have performed that might have saved Her life".

"Based on information from the investigators that it was a very hot period, and she fell ill on the uphill trek," she explained.

"She was asked her to go back, unescorted. Then the vessel departed, reportedly without conducting a headcount.

"At some stage in that sequence, or soon after, she died, without company."

Company Response

Through an announcement, the CEO affirmed that the company was "collaborating extensively with officials to assist their investigation".

He mentioned that the firm was "extremely apologetic that this has transpired" and had provided its full support to the loved ones.

Cruise Industry Practices

The ship serves up to 120 guests with 46 crew, according to company details. It was specially constructed to enter distant areas of Australia's coast and is equipped with "auxiliary vessels" - minor craft used to transport passengers on day excursions.

Events such as this are uncommon, and cruise ships have procedures to track which passengers are boarding or leaving, according to travel authorities.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] on the ship just isn't an option," a specialist stated.

Shipping companies consider these procedures extremely carefully and have "clever tech in place to prevent such events from taking place," the expert continued.

"This seems to be most likely a surprising - and sad - one-off."
