Cyclone Melissa is predicted to strengthen into a rare highest-level storm as it veers toward the Caribbean island, bringing life-threatening flash flooding and rock falls.

The hurricane, which registered wind speeds of up to 195 km/h as of 6:00 AM GMT, is currently turning north-west in the Caribbean Sea and is expected to make landfall by early next week, based on data from hurricane specialists.

Advisories of electricity outages and disruption to utilities have been announced as Melissa produces up to 76cm of rainfall and storm surges as high as 13ft above ground. "Take cover without delay," inhabitants have been advised.

The cyclone is the 13th named storm in this year's Atlantic hurricane season, which typically ends in November.

Highest-Level Cyclone Threat

A category five storm is the strongest type, with winds of at least 157mph.

Even though this storm is projected to weaken to a Category 4 cyclone before arriving at Jamaica, meteorologists said there was "minimal real distinction in the general consequences" upon landfall, and that the storm will be "at least that intensity" when it hits the island.

The nation's leader the official commented: "I realize that there are numerous residents who are anxious, who are extremely apprehensive, and with good reason: worry is natural.

"Yet the most effective method to manage worry and any nervousness and concern is to remain prepared."

Locals are being told to protect their properties with sand barriers and wooden boards, and to gather essentials.

Advisories are also active for areas in Haiti such as the capital, Port au Prince, the adjacent nation and the eastern part of Cuba, where Melissa is anticipated to bring comparable impacts by the middle portion of the coming week.

Mudslides currently triggered by the storm have resulted in two fatalities in Haiti, according to local authorities.

Future Trajectory

Melissa is predicted to pass over Cuba by midweek before passing across the Antillas Mayores and out into the open ocean.

By the time it arrives at the Caribbean nation, it is predicted to have diminished to a category three storm.
