Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the goal on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at each end of the field

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and fans headed to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two established strikers - had netted only one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs penalty area.

What next for both teams?

Everton: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: Spurs travel to Newcastle's ground on late October for their fourth-round League Cup match against Newcastle.
