Lando Norris edged out team-mate and title rival the Australian for the top spot in the final moments of the practice session at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Norris, who grabbed the championship lead from his teammate by one point after winning in Mexico City two weeks ago, outpaced the Melbourne-born driver by a tiny margin of 0.023secs.

Before then, Oscar Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver throughout the hour before the sprint shootout scheduled for 18:30 GMT.

Max Verstappen, the other racer in realistic title contention, lying 36 points behind behind Norris, was classified in P17 as his team followed a different programme.

His teammate the Japanese driver was the only driver to crash, albeit lightly, when he rotated at corner four during the early running.

Tsunoda slid over the curbs on exit before rotating through the escape zone, and was lucky to escape with just a slight brush of the wall.

Ferrari's the seven-time champion also spun, at the very end of the session, spinning around through the quick descending corner leading to the last turn on to the main straight.

The seven-time champion finished practice in 19th, trailing teammate the Monegasque driver.

Norris and Piastri were far ahead of the rest of the field, with the German's car third fastest, over half a second off the Australian's time.

The Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso was fourth quickest, with Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto fifth from the Mercedes of George Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly and the Williams of Carlos Sainz.
