New research suggests that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals buying these medications need to be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
